There is a slimy layer of tissue that insulates all abdominal organs and it is called Peritoneum. Due to any condition that damages this slippery tissue there is a scar formation - and this leads to fibrinous bands between pelvic organs. These bands could be flimsy or dense and they are called Adhesions. Adhesions can also be the result from chronic infections like Chlamydia, Tuberculosis, etc.
Adhesions can cause Infertility by mechanically blocking the tubes, altering the tubo-ovarian relationship, or by altering the pelvic anatomy. We know that for conception to occur the sperms should meet the egg in the fallopian tube. Adhesions prevent this from happening as they tend to pull the tube away from the ovary. Sometimes the tube is partially blocked leading to Ectopic pregnancies. Rarely if the adhesions are severe they can inhibit ovulation from occurring as well.
