PICSI, or Physiological ICSI is a clever innovation that helps the embryologist choose the best sperm for injecting in an ICSI procedure.
At Janini IVF, the treatment is carried out by the best IVF doctors in Delhi NCR . Today, Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) is a big boon to all childless couples. The advances in the science and embryo culturing techniques has resulted in success rates climbing to almost 80% levels per attempt, something that was unthinkable a decade ago. Further additions to the technology and the skill and experience amassed by proficient Clinicians and Embryologists have further helped anyone seeking to have a progeny. PICSI is one recent such addition.
In a normal or conventional ICSI procedure, one sperm is chosen by the Embryologist doing the procedure to be injected into one egg. The sperm selection process is through visual assessment and the Embryologist tries to pick up a sperm that looks as normal as possible. It is understandable, then, that the outcome of ICSI depends on the sperm being injected because that particular sperm’s DNA will contribute 50% of the makings of an embryo. Better sperm = better embryo = higher success. Therefore, ICSI outcomes depend heavily on the experience, dedication and patience of the embryologist doing it. PICSI has tried to enhance the ease of the Embryolgist in selecting the best sperm further.
Providing the best IVF treatment in Delhi , ICSI basically helps to choose the sperm that bind to a compound called Hyaluronan. Hyaluronan is a naturally occurring protein polymer present in all human cells and also, surrounding the egg or oocyte. Nature has devised a method of its own wherein the best sperm is judged by its ability to bind to this biopolymer by way of receptors present on mature sperm’s cell membrane. Mature sperms have it, immature ones don’t. So, PICSI technique incorporates this natural phenomenon by coating the Petri dish with Hyaluronan gel. Sperms are then placed inside the dish and those that are seen to be bound to the gel are picked up and injected into the egg by ICSI.
So, in these respects PICSI is similar to IMSI such that both technologies in their own way try to help the embryologist in picking the best sperm possible for injecting into the egg. Both techniques help us in creating better quality embryos by selecting a better quality sperm than by visual inspection alone.
PICSI needs a good count of sperm so it cannot be done in testicular sperms because in that case, there are very few sperms to begin with. Again, for patients with sperm count less than 1 million/ml also PICSI is difficult to apply.
